"TikTok: Transforming Gen Z's Lives"
A simple digital app can provide various opportunities, changing lives.
The video sharing app TikTok has taken over the world, consuming the minds of users from all different regions (155 countries). Its exponential growth reaching more than two billion downloads, throughout the past couple of years, has caused individuals to live and think more than open-mindedly than ever before. TikTok allows people to record 60 second videos, using hashtags and unique effects to keep up with the current trends.
Many different age groups are found using TikTok, however, Gen Z dominates the app. 60% of TikTok users are a part of Gen Z, or people who fall between the ages of 16 and 24. This generation is more creative and imaginative than other generations, given that they have access to produce or receive content right at their fingertips. Users have spent their time on this app dancing, singing, laughing, and even crying. People have also come together to fight social justice issues or create certain movements. TikTok gives individuals a voice to be heard by the 689 million users worldwide.
In the age of high-speed Internet and a digital world, people dedicate their lives to staring at screens. Just like any other social media app, TikTok can be time-consuming or considered “addicting.” Just this past year, U.S. users have spent an average of 858 minutes per month on TikTok.
Although it may take more time away from people’s day, it can be an educational experience. Each time users scroll through the app, they learn something new that was never known before. People can search for reliable information through the many different verified profiles on TikTok. For example, there are different professionals found on the app: doctors, money managers, life coaches, chefs, etc. who all provide insight through their TikToks.
This app can help students receive different academic opportunities. Rosalia Cefalu, a sophomore at Manhattan College, speaks about her experience of being both a student and popular TikTok creator: "My current internship, I actually got from a TikTok," she notes. "A startup company based in Portland, Oregon actually reached out to me...and offered me an internship as a data analyst." She continues, "I run data analytics on all of their accounts." This app has provided users with more experiences, especially through academics.
The widespread information found through TikTok has caused a younger audience to develop a more creative and involved side. The increase in users and uploaded content reflects how people around the globe perceive the app: a source of entertainment and expression.
